ABOUT NATVIK DESIGN INC.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

A small, family based firm, NDI was established in 1999 and is currently based in London, Ontario. Run by director Mathis Natvik, project management and administrative support is provided by his wife, Satu. At present the focus of our work is consultations and design related to ecologically informed landscapes. To that end, NDI has an extensive history of working with other professionals including architects, engineers, planners and landscape architects. Our firm has worked on projects throughout southwestern Ontario including ones located in the City of Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Guelph, Kitchener Waterloo and Chatham-Kent.

NDI’s measure of success for all of its projects is provision of great value both to the client and the surrounding ecosystem. Sometimes achieving this goal requires more time than a quick fix, but NDI remains firmly committed to providing long term solutions that provide the greatest value over time.

MATHIS NATVIK
MathisNatvikMathis’ passion for plants and soils ‘took root’ while growing up on a southwestern Ontario farm surrounded by crop fields, Carolinian forests, wetlands, and the Lake Erie coast. Since 1985, the family farm has provided a place to trial his large scale gardening experiments, plant propagation, and ecological restoration.

Upon completing his BSc specializing in Ecology (Guelph), Mathis started his own ecological restoration business in 1999. Initially focused on large scale restoration projects and a native plant nursery, the business gradually diversified to include green roofs, rain gardens, pictorial meadows and public gardens. His design approach is highly influenced by Ontario’s natural ecosystems, rural landscapes, and the green roofs & landscape styles of Norway where he was born.

Mathis returned to Guelph and completed his Masters of Landscape Architecture in 2012, with a thesis examining how Ontario ecosystems can be used as analogs for extensive green roofs. He is currently researching the restoration of oak savannas and woodlands for his PhD at Western University.

Mathis is frequent speaker at Ontario universities, botanical gardens, horticultural associations, and private functions. He currently resides in London where he lives with his wife and 3 daughters.
