MANUAL OF GREEN ROOF HORTICULTURE FOR THE UPPER MIDWEST AND LOWER GREAT LAKES
Given the rising popularity of extensive green roofs in North America, there is a need for expert knowledge of the plant and growing medium (horticultural) components of vegetated roofs. This manual reviews the ecological principles driving plant and growing medium selection for low maintenance EGRS. It follows this with identification of the growing medium and plants best suited for low maintenance EGRs in the lower great lake Region. Planting lists for a variety of conditions (100 to 150 mm growing medium; sun to shade; flat to sloped) are provided as well as case studies documenting the results of ecologically informed EGR plant and growing medium selection.
Written by Mathis Natvik, MLA and PhD candidate, the handbook is based on his years of experience running Natvik Design Inc., an ecological design firm based in London, Ontario. It is the author’s hope that this handbook will help green roof suppliers, designers and installers avoid some of the common EGR pitfalls and ensure that their projects are successful over the long term.
At approximately 150 pages of text and colour photos, this manual’s intended audience includes landscape architects, landscape designers, architects, nursery owners, green building consultants and construction firms. Expected to be available in summer of 2016, ordering will begin in spring 2016 for $100 CDN plus shipping and applicable taxes.
