CONSULTATIONS & SITE ASSESSMENTS

NDI provides ecologically informed findings and recommendations for landscaping and ecological restoration projects. Emphasis is placed on integrating projects into surrounding ecosystems and ensuring long term success.

PARTICIPATORY DESIGN CONSULTATIONS

The participatory design process involves including a project’s stake holders in the design. For example, members and staff of the YMCA of Greater Toronto were consulted during the creation of a roof garden for the YMCA’s new Cherry Street location (which is part of the Canary District that hosted the 2015 Pan Am & Parapan Am Games). The resulting roof garden includes an outdoor studio, walking paths, meadows, and areas for relaxing while enjoying beautiful views of downtown Toronto. The features of the roof garden also fit nicely into the YMCA’s programming needs for the space.

GREEN ROOF CONSULTATION

NDI regularly provides consultations for green roof projects including recommendations for planting design, growing medium specifications, and other green roof components. The above image depicts the layers of an extensive green roof system using recycled polyethylene as the drainage layer.

SITE ASSESSMENTS

To create plantings that thrive in the long term, a thorough understanding of local site conditions is required. NDI provides clients with recommendations for a variety of large scale projects including tree plantings, ecological restoration projects, and ecologically vibrant gardens. For example, it is important to fully assess a site for the purpose of creating tree plantings that will thrive in the long run. Site conditions such as soil types, wind exposure, roadside salt exposure, and light will strongly influence the tree species selection. This must be balanced with ecological and aesthetic goals as well.
