GREEN ROOFS

NDI provides overall design, planting plants and sourcing recommendations for extensive and intensive green roofs. Our company has particular expertise in the design of high performance, ecologically stable green roofs with minimal maintenance requirements.

RESIDENTIAL GREEN ROOF DESIGN

Yes, green roofs can be installed on residential homes! The main obstacle to residential green roofs is having the structural strength to support the extra weight of a green roof. It is easiest to include green roofs when designing new homes and major renovations. The cost of stronger framing and roof trusses is insignificant to the total value of a new build project. In addition to the environmental benefits of green roofs, they also add aesthetic interest (especially on sloped roofs and lower roof decks that are visible from windows on upper floors).

SLOPED ROOFS

Green roofs can also be installed on sloped roofs. When designing sloped green roofs, NDI uses the building codes from countries where sloped green roofs are common such as in Norway, Iceland, and Sweden. Sloped green roofs are especially attractive, since they are easily viewed by people on the ground. There is a large diversity of colourful flower species that thrive on the harsh conditions of sloped green roofs, even without irrigation.

ROOF GARDEN DESIGN

The design of roof gardens includes building features for human access and enjoyment. In dense urban areas, roof tops are sometimes the only outdoor spaces available for outdoor elements. Green roof vegetation can be mixed with pathways, sitting areas, and gathering areas. The result is a charming environment where lush vegetation mixes with the view of the surrounding vertical urban landscape.

COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL GREEN ROOF DESIGN

In Canada, green roofs are most common on commercial and institutional buildings such as retail stores, residential towers, city halls, libraries, and university campuses. On large flat roofs, green roofs can greatly reduce stormwater runoff, reduce energy use, and lengthen roof membrane lifespans. At large scales, green roofs can also increase the ecological value to wildlife in urban areas, especially pollinators.
