WORKSHOPS

NDI’s director, Mathis Natvik, is an experienced speaker able to present on a number of topics including park naturalization, reforestation, green roofs, ecological restoration, right-of-way plantings, ecological gardening, rain gardens, urban forestry, and xeriscapes. Mathis has previously spoken to a wide range of audiences including the following: The City of Mississauga, Credit Valley Conservation Authority, Bentall Kennedy Property Management, Humber College, Fanshawe College, University of Guelph, Native Plant Society of North America, Canadian Green Building Council (Ottawa Chapter), Communities in Bloom and the Ottawa Field Naturalists.

ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION WORKSHOPS

Workshops on ecological restoration can be created using a combination of custom presentations and guided tours of project sites. Ecological restoration is the practice of managing a site towards a condition that resembles the historical ecosystem that occurred there. In southern Ontario, this could include the restoration of ecosystems such as wetlands, deciduous forests, oak-hickory forests, oak savanna, and tallgrass prairie. NDI has designed and installed many large ecological restoration projects which can serve as excellent sites for group visits.

ECOLOGICAL GARDEN WORKSHOPS

Gardens can be designed to beautiful at the same time as provided many of the same benefits as those offered by natural ecosystems. NDI can create workshops that explain how ecological gardens are planned and installed. Ecological gardens fit into a variety of settings ranging from private gardens to public parks. Various concepts can be discussed including rain gardens (which capture storm water runoff), xeriscapes (which require no irrigation), and the use of native species in more formal planting designs.

GREEN ROOF WORKSHOPS

The increase in the popularity of green roofs has created a high demand for presentations on this topic. NDI can create custom workshops that focus on how green roofs are designed and built. Important topics include how to integrate green roofs with the rest of the project and how to maximize the biological value of the green roof. NDI has considerable expertise in creating greens roofs which support diverse, low maintenance plantings of native wildflowers and grasses.
